Firefox 4 connects to a site with java applet and then closes Java Console, breaking the connection

This behavior did not occur with Firefox 3.6, so I have reinstalled Firefox 3.6.17; it does not occur with IE either. Others with Firefox 4 are experiencing the same problem. My site is a MOO that uses a java applet for connection; with Firefox 4, the connection is made, but Firefox closes the Java Console within 30 seconds, even though the user has done nothing, and of course this breaks the connection. I have the latest version of Java (6.025) and have made sure there are no older versions of Java on my computer or Java Console extensions in the browser. My OS is 32-bit Vista Business.
