Version 4.0.1 decided to re-download. Lost all bookmarks, etc. WHY?

Version 4.0.1 installed on my lap-top running Windows XP. Tried to open Firefox but window pop-up indicated updated version available. Downloaded and found that it was the same version of 4.0.1 but now have no Bookmarks, History, etc.
