Hi,

my firefox beta started crashing my whole system yesterday, and only noticeable change i made was a memory upgrade from 3 to 4Gb RAM..

I've tested my system extensively, and it works fine until firefox is started, after this the whole system starts crashing and takes forever to be responsive. I've uninstalled and re-installed firefox, tried running it without addons, tried to close all tabs, and everything ekse i could remember.. still no luck.

I'm getting desperate cuz i really wanted to keep this beta release on my computer, and cuz is a fresh installation, i can't install firefox 3.6 side by side on it, i only get a 'upgrade' option on install wizard..

What can i do to fix this?

Thanx in advance!

The steps in Basic troubleshooting would suggest you always try in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode obviously some of the additional software can clash, that is even more likely if you are using a beta version of firefox, and probably beta or alpha versions of some of the addons or plugins.

Really? lol how dumb do you think i am? Do you think i buy memories without testing them first? From all the info i provided that's all you absorbed? how about the part EVERYTHING ELSE is working fine? no? not relevant?

I am wondering why you have apparently not

  • installed the two versions of firefox in separate locations
(as I believe is the default).
  • Or simply uninstalled the Beta and reinstalled the version 3.6.

Some Firefox Beta users; with lesser talents than yourself; may not consider the recommendation to use separate profiles, when installing (or attempting to) two versions of firefox.

It may be worth remembering this board is answered by volunteers, not all of whom may appreciate your obvious frustration.

Didn't know, i thought this was the official beta support page.. Anyway, i'd assume people actually read the whole thread before replying it, or did you also just choose to ignore "I'm getting desperate cuz i really wanted to keep this beta release on my computer (...) i only get a 'upgrade' option on install wizard.. "?

I'm sorry if i come out hard, but YES, is very frustrating having a brand new laptop lagging due to firefox, and yet being unable to test it further without losing all my very important data (history, bookmarks, passwords, addons, etc..), i didn't install 3.6 from the beginning cuz i already was using beta in my other 2 laptops (which, btw, had no issues so far) and saw no use in installing 3.6 instead of directly 4 beta.. If i'd only guessed what was expecting me..

I am not sure I follow your statement
"(...)cuz is a fresh installation, i can't install firefox 3.6 side by side on it, i only get a 'upgrade' option on install wizard.. "

You can easily install two versions and keep all your bookmarks etc. I am not using my usual machine so do not have all the links available that I would usually quote but will try to answer.

Most users who install Beta versions of firefox, or for that matter other software, are usually already fairly familiar with the software, and often install the original version before the beta version. If you had done even a default install of firefox3.6 then 4beta you would get them installed separately and would not have encountered your current difficulties.

I would suggest as a first step you backup your bookmarks manually by exporting as a .JSON file see Bookmarks in Firefox that allows you to restore the bookmarks etc even if you do loose them.

The easiest method is then to uninstall firefox (but not use the option to delete data), then do a fresh install first of firefox 3.6 then of firefox 4 beta

I would imagine a custom install of Firefox 3.6 could relativly easily be achieved without uninstalling 4 beta, first but it is not worth complicating matters.

Your next step is to use the profile manager to create additional profiles and make sure you use separate profiles for each version see Managing Profiles. Probably also worth changing the shortcut on the beta version so it starts with a command line to ensure it uses the profile you set up for the beta.

If firefox does not automatically retain the bookmarks you then need to reimport them from the backup you created earlier.

PS I forgot to mention, as you have two other laptops already running firefox beta are you familar with the SYNC facilities the beta offers.

An alternative would be to manually copy the exported bookmarks file from one of the old laptops and re-import it on the new laptop.

John, thanx for all your help, but meanwhile i was able to solve the problem..

Not sure if this was what made the trick, or simply firefox decided to act straight on me.. :) My actions were uninstalling NoScript add-on, restart, and the re-install it, restart.

After this firefox seems to be working fine, i'm gonna test it for a few more hours, and then post the result.

Thanx for you time, patience and availability.

Cheers!

John... "(...) tried running it without addons, tried to close all tabs, and everything ekse i could remember..", obviously this included safe mode.

Still experiencing some slowdowns, but probably from the internet connection, cuz the system has a whole is just not the same.. Obviously this wasn't a problem from hardware, and why NoScript, even disabled (or in safe mode), influenced the whole system, i have no clue.. Now i need to leave, but in a few more hours i'll return and check the firefox functionality again. If no more problems are detected i'll post here and consider this issue solved.

Thanx again for all your feedback.

Regards!

Ok, confirmed! Everything is back to normal, even with my usual >8 tabs open, the system is fluent and responsive as before, or even better! (i did upgrade my memory... =))

Now i only have one question.. how do i click solved it on my own post? hehe I guess i'll give it to John, considering he did followed the thread and probably will use this info to help other with similar issues..

Cheers!

Thanks for that, but I would still suggest you try running a stable versions as your main working browser, and then the beta version in a separate profile.

Also as you are saying you consider the problems relate to use of No Script have you considered posting on the forum at No Script.

Glad it worked out.

God D4%#!!

It's not NoScript! Now same thing started to happen today with my netbook, and i don't have NoScript installed.. It's a firefox issue, i'm pretty sure now. back to troubleshooting mode.. :( I'll keep you updated.

I must say I wonder whether some factor other than firefox, beta or not; is causing the problems you notice.

I notice you did say your other two laptops run firefox beta ok.

At the moment I have firefox beta on a legacy machine that I recently upgraded to a half a GB RAM, obviously hardly sparkling performance, but it is not crashing, (if firefox has problem it exits gracefully, without any BSOD) and can certainly open 8 tabs.

Hello again,

John, it's definitely firefox beta, and nothing else, that i'm sure cuz i've tested my netbook with regular firefox, and same addons, and everything was working fine, only addon that wasn't installed was the feedback addon.. And my upgraded laptop also went back to crashing (not so frequent, but still..). So i decided to uninstall the feedback addon, and test firefox beta once again.. Everything is still the same, in both pc's.. Tomorow i'll make a fresh install, on the netbook, and i'll install the addons one by one until i find the issue...

Writing this very post is amazingly frustrating, considering the laptop is crashing every 10 seconds in every 60 or so..

I'm very close to giving up this beta release, if things don't change soon enough.

Regards.

If you have the current version as well as the beta version installed then you only need to use the beta version on the two other PCs. On the problematic laptop only use Firefox 4 beta for testing purposes.

If you do find what the problem is that causes firefox beta to crash one laptop but not the other two machines I am sure others are going to be interested.

Have you tried firefox beta yet in safe node with all addons and extensions disabled and NOT using hardware acceleration?

Does firfefox beta still crash the one laptop in safe mode ? Are you able to confirm firefox 3.6 runs without crashing the problem machine ? ( or are you still using only firefox 4 beta )

John, you didn't really understood, the problem was happening in both computers i use in regular basis, the third in haven't even used it since this happened.. Anyway, i had already tried and retried running in safe-mode and/with all ad-dons disabled and no matter what, firefox beta is still crashing my computers. Can't figure out what causes this, but i've given up already anyway.. i simply don't have the time to troubleshoot constantly.. So i rolled-back to 3.6 and resumed my usual work-flow..

i guess i'll wait for beta 11 to be released and give it a try to see if this issue is no more..

I hope it works out ok with the next release then.
I think my misapprehension was due to reading
~ ... cuz i already was using beta in my other 2 laptops (which, btw, had no issues so far) ...

Good Luck, John
