Downloads stall after intense firefox use

I don't know if the problem stems from firefox, a plugin, or the operative system.

After opening many firefox tabs, and browsing and downloading a lot, downloads start to go idle unless the mouse pointer is right above them. Even worse, sometimes download stop unless the mouse pointer is moving over them.

The only solution for this problem that I could find is simply to re boot.

I am running the latest stable Firefox version (3.63), on win 7 64, on a laptop, and my internet connection is via a home wireless lan.
