Firefox application icon disappears from menu bar

Mac OS 10.5.8 Firefox 3.6.x

When I open a window in Firefox (and in Thunderbird) the Firefox application menu icon disappears. I can still access the menu by clicking on the blank space between the Apple & File Menus icons. Once I close all windows in Firefox, the icon returns.

This ONLY happens in Firefox and Thunderbird; never is any other application
