Firefox is hung up. Will do nothing, even won't let me shut the computer down and reboot

Firefox is hung up and won't even let me shut the laptop down and reboot. It says "not responding".

Every time Firefox opened

 to open the Windows Task Manager, then select the Processes tab and locate the firefox.exe process.  Click on it so it is highlighted, then hit the End Process button.
