After starting Firefox for the first time it starts to load and then remains at this stage - but does not error - and I have to quit with no page having been displayed

Opening Firefox for the first time the welcome page starts to load but it then remains at this stage. It does not error, but simply stays in a loop of loading. No page is displayed and I have to quit.
