Can cookies be remotely cleaned/cleared out?

Hi, this may appear to be a bit paranoid. But sometimes I open Firefox and go to my online email or Amazon, all the cookies that remembered my user name and password disappear. Then I have to log into every routinely visited website again. So my question is: Can -or- what are the chances that cookie cache could be REMOTELY swiped clean? Thanks.
