For more than a week now this is happening - no spell check while I'm typing. I finally typo-ed (obviously mis-spelled) and went into settings. 'Check Spelling while typing' box was checked - but it isn't working; and it still isn't.

After posting I installed an American dictionary from 'add-ons' and it worked. I never had to do that before with Thunderbird, the dictionary was always ,, there

Happy ending. Thank you for your attention,

It is weeks later and this spell-checking is still not in evidence.

Why is your spelling option not working?

Does this freeze when you use it? What languages do you use when you use these? try to see if you have set the correct language.

Hello there

Have you recently missed an update or did you have it but changed your PC with your Software?

It should be clear that a spellcheck dictonary dictionary has also been installed or are you using the locale / standard dictionary that is already there?
