When trying to set up proxies in firefox, I typ in about:config i accept the risk and continue and get this message: Changing these preferences can impact Firefox performance or security. And I cant go any further. Please advise.

You can set up proxies in Settings > General > Network Settings (at the bottom of the page).

If you can't change anything in about: config, you may have a policy preventing that. Enter about:policies in the address bar to check.
