Preference "browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInTabs" sets itself to true every time I close and reopen Firefox. I believe it just randomly started doing it one day. I have to manually set it to false each time I open the browser This preference makes it so, when true, whenever you click a bookmark it opens it in a new tab rather than replacing the tab you are currently on.

Check your profile folder for a user.js file.

Note that you can see on the "Help -> More Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page if you have a file like userjs or other customization files like userChrome.css/userContent.css.

The user.js file will only be present if you or other software has created this file and normally won't be present. You can check its content with a text editor (right-click: "Open with"; do not double-click). The user.js file is read each time Firefox is started and initializes preferences to the value specified in this file, so preferences set via user.js can only be changed temporarily for the current session. You can delete the user.js file if you didn't create this file yourself.
