tried to install latest Thunderbird (automatically determined, Thunderbird 91.70.0.dmg) to mac book pro running Marvericks
As above. clicking on the downloaded file appeared to work, but upon first run it asked to be copied into the apps folder, but instead of going there it was copied to Volumes as a mounted device. It was the same .dmg filename, which when clicked just tried to install again. It appeared on the desktop as a device and had to unmount it.
Maybe I should try version 68 of T-bird, but how? Where to find it?

I had followed the steps as indicated in the suggested reply, above. But I only get a message stating "You can't use this version of the application "Thunderbird" with this version of the OS. You have OS X 10.9.5. The application requires 10.12 or newer"
I need to find a place where I can download a Thunderbird that will support Mavericks 10.9.5, or earlier. I'm not able to update the OS further on this computer. (MBP mid-2009, Mac5,2)
Anything further, or am I forced to give up on Tbird?
Thanks.

And if you use Firefox the latest version you can run on the old macOS 10.9 to 10.11 is Firefox 78.15.0esr. https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/78.15.0esr/mac/

Thanks much for the Tbird solution! It seems to be working splendidly. And also to James for anticipating my next question. I was about to post when I saw that.
