Compact Now keeps popping up when I am trying to get other things done. I more often than not just cancel out of it, but it's annoying and distracting and interrupts my flow. At times, I do click on it to perform the compacting task, but them everything comes to a standstill. I can't delete messages, can't move them to other folders, can't answer emails. Nothing. I have large folders full of emails that I have kept from years ago, so it takes it a long time to finish compacting. Meanwhile, I am left stranded, unable to complete the tasks that need to be seen to. Is there any way that I can opt out of getting these compact now pop-ups? I am running Windows 7 Ultimate sp1, with Thunderbird 91.4.0 Thank you!

What you are seeing with compact is a symptom of something more serious.

Let's first try the following and report your results:

  • Please start *Windows'* in safe mode with networking enabled

win7 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17419/windows-7-advanced-startup-options-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7

  • Still in Windows safe mode, start Thunderbird in Troubleshoot mode

Does problem go away?
