Thunderbird Is Constantly Downloading Outlook and and Gmail (imap accounts) in a never ending loop

For the past few weeks I've noticed that Thunderbird is constantly (24 hours a day/7 days a week) downloading my imap account emails. It never appears to sync and only pauses if I view an email then after a brief period it continues again.

It appears to revert back to downloading the first message and because there are thousands of messages it never ceases.

I have unsuccessfully attempted to reinstall these accounts but when I do the software will not comply saying that the username, password or configuration is wrong.

I also installed Thunderbird on an old laptop just to see if it worked with a brand new install and that was fine.

Unfortunately, whilst I did attempt to do the same thing on my main pc I came across many issues and had to revert back to a saved profile to prevent loss of all my emails.

in preferences, search for virus.

Make sure the allow anti virus clients to quarantine is turned off (no check mark) and see if that helps.
