I just downloaded Thunderbird on my new computer (HATE Windows Mail). I use gmail for my email. My mail DOES get sent out, but DOES NOT save to my SENT ITEMS folder. It starts the process, but cannot finish. It seems to get bogged down and can't complete.. How can I fix this?

First, you should uncheck 'Place a copy in' in the Copies & Folders section of Account Settings, since gmail automatically copies sent messages. Then, right-click the account in the Folder Pane, Subscribe..., Refresh, and check the box for the Sent Mail folder. You should also disable antivirus scanning of outgoing mail if it's enabled, and add the TB profile folder as an exception in AV settings.

Well, it's still not saving into my SENT folder, and my deleted mail just disappears. It does not go into the deleted folder.

I HATED Windows Mail, but Thunderbird isn't making me feel much better this go-round either...

lets back up a bit.

Gmail has a sent mail folder. Outlook has a sent folder. I am unaware of one that has a sent items folder in IMAP.

Similarly gmail has a trash folder, outlook has a deleted.

Which mail provider are we using here? Your descriptions of folders do not match those offered by your mail provider, but they do align with folders used in windows live mail (I guess the windows 10 mail app might also use them, I have never set it up to know.)

I am wondering if your expectations on where things should be are being set by you previous experiences with the Microsoft products.

I have been using Thunderbird for years. When I first got this computer 3 months ago, I used Windows Mail, (I couldn't download anything that wasn't Microsoft) (Sorry, I am not very savvy). I hated it, so my son downloaded Thunderbird for me. My Sent folder doesn't work, my Trash folder doesn't save my deleted mail, so 1) when I SEND an email, there is no record of it 2) when I delete an email, there is no record of it, and if I accidentally delete, I can't find it to move it back to the Inbox I have tried doing the suggestions, and nothing works. I guess I need to start over from the beginning? LOL! I am using IMAP, and getting my mail from Gmail..

Another question: what are Local Folders?

Did you subscribe to the Sent Mail folder and disable 'Place a copy in'?

In Server Settings, 'When I delete a message' should be 'Just mark it as deleted' for gmail accounts. Subscribe to the Trash folder to see deleted mail.
