I'm having trouble with SMTP and IMAP settings, getting my email into Thunderbird. It says no, wrong password, but I've been all over GMail reset the password, but nothing works. I'm really fried. I can be kinda tech savvy but this has been too long a day and I have other major projects that need Thunderbird to be working now, soon.

Can someone recommend an online geek that could sort this out for me. I used to have an awesome guy but he's moved on and I don't want to sign up for a service for this one glitch.

I've checked all tutorials, checked Google, checked the settings in Thunderbird. No joy. Thanks if you have a suggestion.

You mention gmail and Imap and password, but do not mention OAuth2. You say you have check settings, but do not say what server settings you are using.

First make sure you have cookies enabled in Thunderbird.

  • Select 'Menu app icon' > 'Options/Preferences'
  • In 'Options/Preferences' left Pane select Privacy & Security
  • Select checkbox 'Accept cookies from sites'

Check gmail server settings in Account Settings > Server Settings: IMAP

  • incoming server: imap.gmail.com
  • Port: 993
  • User Name : full gmail email address
  • Connection Security: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication method: OAuth2

Check outgoing SMTP server settings:

  • incoming server: smtp.gmail.com
  • Port: 465
  • User Name : full gmail email address
  • Connection Security: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication method: OAuth2

Then check saved passwords:

  • Menu app icon > Options/Preferences > Privacy & Security
  • Under 'Passwords' section click on 'Saved Passwords'
  • click on 'Show Passwords'

look for this line : imap://imap.gmail.com (imap://imap.gmail.com) Right click on that line and select 'Edit Password' Remove all content and carefully type in the current gmail password - the one you use to access webmail. If you see a similar 'smtp' line for gmail - do the same - edit password.

Please Tell me if there is or is not a line for oauth.

Restart Thunderbird.

If you get prompted by gmail in a browser type pop up to enter password to allow Thunderbird, then enter password - same one you are using to access webmail.

This should create an oauth token in the Thunderbird saved password area, so gmail can use it from then onwards.
