If the pdf is an attachment to a gmail message, opening the file from within TB requires that it be downloaded from the gmail server. If there is a big lag, it's probably because your antivirus is scanning mail folders - an option which is generally discouraged, and is fixed by adding the TB profile folder as an exception in AV settings (leaving the real-time background scan in place).

I don't use any antivirus. The problem is not with my Gmail account, but with my private hosting. I noticed that the problem can be simulated by blocking the internet by changing the default gateway in the network settings. Thunderbird, unable to connect to the Internet, behaves exactly as described in the previous message. It looks like he tried to connect to something and opens the PDF document only after the timeout.
