Firefox latest update is a convoluted mess!

The new Firefox opens multiple tabs and there's no obvious way to switch to single tab. Why should I have to go through pages of how-to articles for such a basic option? Why can't I open a Google page without having to go to the main Firefox window first? Please tell me if there's a way to get the old Firefox version back?
