hi jjom, do you have two-factor authentication activated? if so you need create an app password in your Microsoft Account on the web (go to security -other -app passwords). I do assume you use the Automatic Account Configuration and not the manual config eg Automatic Account Configuration. I have just successfully activated in Windows 10. My accounts settings are definitively different the one you have provide in your screenshot, that's why I recommend you to use the Automatic Configuration, eg. only provide your email and password, Thunderbird should be able to figure out the rest. I hope this will resolve your issues.

two-factor authentication activated? NO

Automatic Account Configuration YES

I've already removed the account and added it again, but the problem continues

Translated error message :

  • The imap-mail.outlook.com server ended the connection. It may have ended or there may be a network problem.

I've checked the official status and results here:

Looks like it might be an outlook issue.

Okay, I'll wait for the problem to resolve and try again.

I have the same issue : user is authenticated but cannot connect, for the last 24 hours, cannot download any of my mail via Thunderbird or even via the Samsung email app implying that it is an outlook server issue, contacted outlook support and they told me to ask thunderbird support...

Outlook support is not exactly forth coming with help when they learn that you are not using an outlook product or webmail service. But you would have thought they would know about issues that are posted on their own service status.

The info seems to imply there is an issue with attachments which they are working on.

If the error was with a password, then you would expect the error message to say it is an authentication issue.

But when the message says outlook has disconnected possibly due to network and they are trying to sort out an attachment issue, it makes you wonder if they have stopped pop/imap/smpt servers temporarilly.

Has anyone tried logging on to webmail via a browser, maybe using a captcha to get access and then retrying to access via Thunderbird ?

Has anyone set up an app password to use instead of normal password and if yes, is that failing as well?

Hi again, as stated in my above reply I did in fact actually tried myself this morning and had no problem whatsoever to connect to the outlook server in Windows 10, using the Automatic Configuration and an app password (since I have two-factor authentication on). As stated I got a completely different IMAP server setting, not "imap-mail.outlook.com". I have just now done the same in Linux and had no problem (except that I had to install an add in,see below). It should be said that I do have a 365 account, and my settings are (probably therefore)

in Linux I had to install the add-in Owl to connect Thunderbird to the Exchange email account using OAuth

In the end working fine for at least Office 365 clients/with the outlook.office365.com settings , maybe you should try the Microsoft recommended setting as per their support page POP and IMAP email settings for Outlook

Cheers from Stockholm.

Hi again, so I have literally just now created a completely new MS/outlook.com test account, and have I have been able to successfully set up this newly created email account in Thunderbird in Win 10 and emails were downloaded, meaning it can't be an outlook.com issue.

The accounts settings (Automatically set by Thunderbird) were as expected eg.

INCOMING

  • Server Type: IMAP Mail Server
  • Server Name: outlook.office365.com Port: 993
  • User Name: something@outlook.com
  • Connection Security: SSL/TLS

OUTGOING

  • Server Type: SMTP
  • Server Name: smtp.office.365 Port: 587
  • Connextion Security: STARTTLS
  • User name & password are the same as for INCOMING

(Note difference between INCOMING and OUTGOING server names!!)

I must conclude not an outlook.com issue, unless something very different in Portugal (eg. Portugal banned etc.,) which I find difficult to explain.

Suggest you send me screenshot of the Server Settings, whatever you have been able to set up and will have a look.

Cheers from Stockholm.

I have no problem with accessing, sending and receiving from the browser at www.outlook.com, nor with the application of Windows10 mail. I just have the problem with this program. My email address is xxxxxxxxxxxxx@zonmail.pt

JJom, have you tried by manually changing the nome do servidor "imap-mail.outlook.com" to "outlook.office365.com"?, you do that in Accounts - View Settings for this account -> Server settings, -> user names (nome do servidor), do the same in SMTP Accounts - View Settings for this account -> (bottom of page) Outgoing server (SMTP), you will see one or more, chose the relevant one, click edit and change to smtp.office.365 if so needed, make sure port is 587 and STARTTLS. Cheers

Manual changes to the above settings unfortunately do nothing for these Portuguese .netcabo addresses hosted via Outlook. Even removed the account and set it up automatically as you suggest and it gives the same error connectivity issue message.

On my phone via the generic Samsung mail managed to remove it and re install automatically with Microsoft Exchange and mail is working there now, but no luck with thunderbird...

Hi again and sorry to hear, seems tricky, may I kindly ask you to have a screenshot of your Samsung email server settings to see exactly which settings are used by your Samsung email? Thanks in advance.
