I posted a similar question about 4 years ago , I was unable to get any actual help , and was unable to resolve the issue , so I uninstalled Thunderbird ........ Now , unfortunately , I have a issue that can't be resolved with Windows 10 Mail App (PC not phone) , so I have to find another email program that actually works on my PC as I hate Web Based emails like Outlook , I want it on my PC so whether my internet works or not I have access to emails

With that said , I am still having a issue importing my Contacts into Thunderbird , what I do is go to Address Book , then go to Import , it brings up a little box that asks where to import from , I choose Outlook and Address Book , Only (as I have already downloaded all my emails , I would have thought it would have brought in my folders and Contacts as well , but it looks like after 4 years , Thunderbird still has not fixed this issue , so not thrilled) , So I click OK , and it comes up with another little box saying "There is no email program associated to perform the requested action , Please install a email program or , if one is already installed , create a association in the Default Programs control panel" , so I can't go any farther .... and the issue is , my Outlook is still functioning and I was signed in and it receives emails (actually before Thunderbird does , I get a email thru Windows 10 Mail App , then several minutes later I get one thru Thunderbird , I should be getting them at the same time , I would think

So for whatever reason , it does not recognise Windows 10 Mail App (or Outlook since it is the same thing) , and so I can't get my Address Book to transfer to Thunderbird ......

So far I am not happy , I was also trying to get a picture as the background , as the Windows 95 generic colors that Thunderbird has , are poor at best , I tried Dark and Light and Normal , they all suck and are unpleasant to look at so I wanted to use a picture from my PC like I can with Windows 10 Mail App , but in the Add Ons page , it shows a Add On that can do that , but it says it wont work with this version .... and I did not see any others that were for this version (whatever version I downloaded from Mozilla today) , So will the older ones work  ?? , if not why is there not one for the current version  ??

So can I get some assistance in getting my contacts in ..... and if possible , some info on how to add a picture as the background ..... , Or do I uninstall Thunderbird AGAIN , and go look for something else  ?? ......... Thanks .... Jim

There is no option to automatically import from the W10 Mail app, but it does work, in a way, if Outlook is installed on the same computer. That is 'Outlook', the full email client part of MS Office. If you have an outlook.com account, it can be added to TB to download mail, but importing Contacts is a separate issue. You could export Contacts to a csv and import to TB, or sync Contacts with the TB Address Book with the help of an add-on such as TbSync.

Thanks for the reply , I can't figure out why Thunderbird has not addressed this issue , it has been 4 years and its still the same issue ..... do they not care ?? . this is important stuff that should be addressed .......... I looked at the link you provided , and from what I read in the description , it said to sync stuff that is on the Cloud , I don't have anything on the cloud , and I also do not have the "full" version of Outlook on my PC , only the 10 Mail App , my Outlook is web based which is why I do not like it

All I wanted was a email program that worked like 10 Mail App , or Live Mail or Outlook Express , but that was not part of Microsoft , as they require Windows Updates to function

Here is the issue I have , I had Microsoft tech support whiteboard my PC about 3 years ago , and disable Windows Updates (they did not even think they could do it , as it is not supposed to be able to be disabled) , so after several hours they figured it out , this was done to prevent the Creators Update from auto-installing and screwing up my PC , after several reformats , it would just reinstall every time I got the internet hooked back up after reformatting , so anyways , after 3 years , my Windows 10 Mail App decided that it needs a Update to continue to send/receive emails , well I can't do that , since updates are disabled (and I will not re enable them for any reason) , I cant fix the issue , and the way Microsoft products work now , they are all linked , you can't get Live Mail , without Windows Updates functioning , you can't fix this error without Updates functioning

So I need a email program that is functional and will import all my stuff , so far all I got was my emails for my 2 accounts in TB , no folders , no contacts/address book ......... So do I scrap this and find something else that actually works  ?? , or is there a way to make this a simple process ??? , if I get my contacts , I will be happy for the most part , if I can't , then this thing is getting deleted again , as it is useless without my contacts , and I have no clue as to why it has not improved in functionality in 4 years .........

I don't think there's any way to export contacts from the W10 Mail app (People app). In many cases, the Mail app is connected to a gmail, yahoo or outlook.com account, and so the contacts are synced with the webmail contacts, which can be exported to a format that can be imported to TB. Since you appear to not have any webmail address books, and TB doesn't import from Mail app, I don't see any way forward.

I have the Outlook Live , (web based) , and it has my contacts , or at least most of my contacts , some of the ones that are in 10 Mail App are not on the Outlook one for some reason ........ I just don't like web based email , because if your internet is out , you can't access your emails , so if I need to look at something in my email , like a attachment , and the internet happens to be out (Satellite so you never know) , then I am out of luck till it works again , so I just never use it , since when its on the PC , you can access it anytime , just not send/receive ........ so does that mean there is hope  ???

Log into the account on outlook.com, select the People app, click Manage, Export contacts, download the contacts.csv file. In TB Tools/Import - Address books - Text file - open contacts.csv, use the Move Up/Down buttons to align the input fields with the TB address book fields. You may want to edit the csv in a spreadsheet before importing to make the alignments easier.

What is wrong with this forum ?? , it keeps giving me a error and says "Links are not allowed" and I am not posting any , so I had to delete my reply , I tried 6 times to post a reply .... and it gives the same stupid message and won't post

finally it worked , now lets see if it allows me to say what I wanted Nope , every time I try to answer it gives the same stupid error message ..... I am losing faith in Mozilla more and more

I will try again , it did not format it correctly and I had to edit them to the correct location for each contact , so email was in the wrong location and the name only showed part of it , it has taken about 8 tries to reply with a complete paragraph , I have to break it up , as it does not like something in my posts , dots , or commas , or something it thinks are links

The forum managers have instituted a policy of banning links as an anti-spam measure. It's a ham-fisted overreaction that has attracted much criticism, and might be adjusted in the coming days. In the meantime, replace any periods, besides those that end sentences, with the word dot in URLs, abbreviations, server names and file names.

OK , I have slowly been working on the contacts , I still have to transfer the ones from my Win 10 mail by hand , but overall , I have most of my contacts added

I do have a question related to layout , in one of the bars across the top it shows Unread ,Starred , Contact ,Tags , Attachment , how can I remove some of them , I do not want Starred (I don't even know what that is) and Tags , because I don't Tag anything (whatever that is for) , I wanted to put Print on that bar , but it won't let it attach to it , but it did on the one above it , but I wanted to get rid of some of the clutter as I don't need or use a lot of what is there , also , when I receive a email , it gives the sound , but I do not see any indication , like a (1) or (4) for how many emails I received , or if there are any at all , usually shown in the taskbar on the TB Icon like Win 10 Mail did , I have Notifications set to show in taskbar and make a sound , it makes the sound , but if I am away from the PC then I would not know I had a email unless I physically checked because nothing is showing as far as you received 2 emails or whatever

One last thing , as mentioned before , is there a Add On that allows me to change the background that works with this version ? , as the 3 color choices are not really choices I would choose Thanks , Jim

Also , I did as you suggested and did not use dots/periods after a sentence , and it seems to be working , and not giving that no links allowed error , thanks . , but on that note , why were you allowed to add links but not me ?

The Quick Filter Bar with Unread, Starred etc. can't be customized, but it can be hidden under View/Toolbars. Icons can be added to or removed, and re-positioned, on the Mail Toolbar, by selecting View/Toolbars/Customize and applying drag and drop while the Customize window is open.

OK , I tried to install that Add On , but it said I need to open it with Firefox , so I did and and it gave a error that said it could not be installed because it has not been verified , there was no option to "verify" it , so I don't know how to get it to work

I have not got to the post yet , but I will look and see if I can figure that out ..... this sure is a pain to work with ....

Drag the Download button from Firefox and drop it onto Tools/Add-ons/Extensions in TB.

Ok , thanks ,I got the Add On to work from that link , that helps , As for the background , that post only mentions adding a color , not a picture/image , which is what I want the background to be , like this (picture attached) .

The picture in Mail app is not the background image for the message list - it's just the equivalent of the TB Start Page in Options/General. For the Location, you would enter the path to the image as in this example: file:///C:/Users/username/Downloads/dirtbiker.jpg

To set a background image for the Threads or Folder Panes, add a background-image declaration to the userChrome as described here.

The thing about the picture did not work , all it shows is a blank page , no picture , and I have the location copied/pasted into the "Start Page address location , so it looks exactly like it looks when I have the Start Location unchecked , and I have no clue as to go about doing what is suggested in that post , I am not a coder , and did not want to search thru all that , all I wanted was that background image to cover the entire background like it does in my picture I posted

Also the other Add On thing to show the incoming emails , only works once I actually open TB , if I just sit there , nothing shows up , even though I have emails in my other Win 10 mail , then when I open it , it downloads the new emails that have been sitting there for almost a hour but nothing showing they are there and they don't show up in the pane until I actually open the mail

I have it set to check for new mail every 10 minutes , so this thing is really poorly thought out as that does not even seem to work , it does nothing till I actually open it to check for mail , all this stuff should be standard right from the start , I am becoming less and less thrilled I spent all the time and wasted my limited bandwidth downloading everything and transferring/downloaded all my emails back from 2004 to present , only to be highly disappointed , and only to have this thing work like it was made in 1995 , I have PC video games from back then that run and look better than this does , I know it's not your fault , and I appreciate the help , but this thing is by no means a quality program , I think I will try something else in hopes it is not as unfinished as TB is .... this is really disappointing

Not sure what I am going to do now , but this is unacceptable as a replacement for anything useful to me , it barely works at all on top of looking antiquated , it does not even come close to what I was using as far as functionality goes

The search continues , but again , thank you for all your help , I could not have gotten this far without it .
