Keystrokes get sent to old window when opening a new window

When I open a new window (via command-N), keystrokes that I enter before the new window loads get sent to the old window, whereas I would prefer them to get buffered to the new window. E.g., I have my home screen set to the default Firefox screen (where the cursor is set to the search bar), so when I open a new window and immediately type say "asdf", I expect this to show up in the search bar in the new window.

Is there a way to change the behavior here? I've tried turning off all my extensions, and it's still the same, so seems like that's not the relevant to the problem.

(I recently switched to Firefox from Safari/Chrome, where this was the default behavior)
