"Unable to login at server. Probably wrong configuration, username or password." Win 7 message only on mail acct setup. Exact same settings info on Win 10 sets up IMAP mail okay for Thunderbird. I'm on the current Thunderbird versions on both machines and I've uninstalled and reinstalled on both computers (they are side-by-side). The Win 10 (recent install of OS) works perfectly and the Win 7 does not work. The problem is with a single gmail account. Multiple other gmail accounts work fine on both computers side-by-side but not for this single account that works on all of my other devices (smartphones and Chromebook).

Chosen solution

On Win 7 machine: You've created the mail account. Access:

  • Menu app icon > Options > Security > 'Passwords' tab
  • click on 'Saved Passwords'
  • click on 'Show Passwords'

Q: Do you see all 'three' of these for the gmail account or is one missing? an 'imap://imap.gmail.com......' an 'smtp://smtp.gmail.com......' an 'oauth://accounts.google.com......'

In each line is the User name correct = full email address? For the imap and smtp lines, it should show your normal password, can you confirm this is correct? For the oauth line it should be long line of various numbers, letters and other chars. Do you see this line?

Do you have any other addons installed to help access gmail calendar and contacts? Such as gcontactsync or provider for google calendar? If yes: please disable those addon extensions and restart Thunderbird. Does gmail now access email?

the new account wizard is regularly defeated by anti virus products, particularly those from Symantec that mistake account setups for something nefarious.

I'm using Microsoft Security Essentials in Windows 7. Turned it off and attempted setting up the account again and received the same error message. Also rebooted and tried again with the same result. I've been around long enough that I should have thought about de-activating the anti-virus protection but I didn't until you suggested. Thanks for the suggestion anyway.

Created a new profile and it went through the mail account setup and then went to the logging into the Google account which I did. Then it bumped back to the same error message I've been receiving all along.

Keep in mind that the Thunderbird set up wizard works successfully with the exact same username and password for this same email account on a Win10 computer; whereas, this is on a Win7 computer (I have some legacy stuff I need Win7 to handle properly and it is handy to have the email account functioning on the Win7 computer also).

This resolved the problem. On the Profile list, deleted all entries identified with the email that would not set up using the Wizard. Then used the Wizard for a new try and everything went smoothly. THANKS FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE!
