When Thunderbird launches, The Compact Folders message appears, but when I click on it it won't respond, and neither will Thunderbird. It may be significant that Firefox won't launch either. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Thunderbird, and uninstalling Firefox, but this makes no difference - when it is restarted I get the same problem. I am running 64-bit Win-10

Chosen solution

Try running Windows in safe mode to test if a security/AV program is interfering with TB and/or Firefox performance.

I will do that - though it was running fine yesterday, and I have not personally changed anything. I should probably add that even using Task Manager fails to close Thunderbird and the Compact Folders message

Went into Safe Mode, Thunderbird opened and the Compact Folders message reappeared. So I chose to compact my folders, which seemed to work, and Thunderbird then ran and looked OK, though of course I had no internet. Rebooted to normal, and Thunderbird appeared to continue compacting, and hung. I went to return to Safe Mode, got something wrong, and ended up with a reboot to normal Windows. But Thunderbird was now running normally, and once I re-installed Firefox, so was that. Not sure what happened, but going to Safe Mode has to be a large part of the solution! So thank you for your help. I am sure it wouldn't have been fixed without you!
