When will the filters work on the junk folder automatically instead of having to hit tools run filters. ? It would be worth $$$ to make it happen. Thanks

Why would you want to filter the junk folder? Auto empty it I understand, but what could it contain that would be worth filtering.

There are a lot of emails I want to keep that go into the jink folder. So I do filters on the ones I want to delete. It is easier than have to set filters for all the emails that go into junk and then setting up another folder.

Perhaps you need to look at why they are in the junk folder and what you can do to reduce the numbers. filtering to remove the true junk is almost certainly not the way to do it.

Some general points are;

  • Adding the sender to a Thunderbird address book is a good way to whitelist senders.
  • Make sure the junk filtering for each account is set to respect the address books used for whitelisting.
  • Not using prescriptive providers like Yahoo who appear to universally fail to understand email, but it is they main product offering can also be a help. Their idea of spam filtering largely fails and offers no way to "opt out" of it. So that includes ATT, Verizon AOL and BT by default.
  • Marking things in the spam folder as not spam is also important so the filter can actually learn. It is also one of the reasons marking mail as junk / not junk is an option in filters. It is a learning filter.
  • Adjust the sensitivity of the filter. mail.adaptivefilters.junk_threshold is the preference that determines at what "level" messages are classified as junk. It defaults to 90 increasing this value will mark less mail as spam. Preferences can be edited with the config editor
  • Disable any spam filtering undertaken by an anti virus / internet security suite. They generally do not look at your contacts or anything but their own database of what others think is spam. A bit like Yahoo really.

I am using outlook on a MAC. I just want to apply my filters to my Junk folder automatically. It works manually. I just do not want to see the junk emails I have filtered. There are some emails that go into junk that I want to keep.

Thanks

Auto filtering as per your specific filtering requirements using created Message Filters and Junk Filtering only occurs on new incoming mail that has not been filtered. Those emails will have been received by server and put into 'Inbox'.

All subsequent filtering from any other folder at any other time is manually invoked.

Emails that are in Junk are already filtered according to the training data and junk controls you have setup. Otherwise they would not be in Junk.

If you have emails from a specific email address(s) going into junk, then you need to make sure your junk controls have been set up correctly to include address books as whitelists. Remember, if you select to trust eg: spamassassin headers which may have been set by server, then Thunderbird will put those emails in Junk regardless of whether they exist in a whitelist. Image below as an example of Junk Settings.

If you have already created a Message Filter that you are currently running manually on junk and it works very well to collect required emails: Suggest: Run it automatically on the account when 'getting new mail' and set the filter as 'Filter before Junk Classification' to pick up those specific emails earlier and move them prior to them getting put in the Junk folder in the first place.

If you use an imap mail account and have a 'spam' folder, then check the setting on the server for filtering because the filtering may have occurred on the server before the folders synchronised.

Message Filters run in the order listed, so be aware that an email can get moved prior to a subsequent filter running.

I keep getting emails from app spot.com going into my junk mail folder. It is porn. I checked the web and a lot of people get it. I have a manual filter to delete it but I need a automatic filter to delete it before it goes to junk. I have set the filter to delete it before it goes into junk but does not work. Any suggestions ?

I would assume your account is IMAP and outlook/hotmail is classifying it as SPAM.

Log into the the outlook.com web site and place your rule there instead of in Thunderbird. That way the mail will be removed before Thunderbird sees it. Alternatively add the email address to your contact on outlook.com and it will not be marked as spam there and your Thunderbird filter should then work in the inbox.

I just want to filter my junk mail automatically. I want to write a rule to delete the spam when it arrives in the junk mail folder. Make it easy and let us set rules for the junk mail folder.

Thanks

If you select the Junk folder in the 'Run selected filter(s) on:' drop-down in the Message Filters window, does it not run automatically when getting new mail?

Yes it works but I have to do it manually. I do don't want certain junk mail to appear in my junk mail. I want it deleted before it ever goes into junk mail. I have set up filters but they do not run automatically. Most of them are from appspot.com. A lot of people are getting this bad junk mail from this domain and cannot get rid of it automatically. We do not want it in our junk mail.

Matts advise is really good. Have you logged on to the outlook webmail account and set up the outlook filter to remove those emails? This would completely solve your issue and you would not even download them. That's assuming you do not want to download them in the first place.

If you have not setup webmail account/server to remove them - since it is the server scanning and putting them into Spam in the first place - did you setup the webmail account rule to set as not spam so email is left in Inbox therefore allowing you to auto delete it via Thunderbird?

Both options would solve the problem, so which did you choose ?

Still would like to write rules for the junk mail folder to get rid of unwanted emails in the junk folder. Emails from "app spot" is very annoying. Microsoft will not do anything. Many people are having problems with this domain. I know you can do it manually but not automatically.

I've read through this conversation again. You have not provided any helpful information about your account and your junk settings. All the forum knows is you use a MAC, an outlook account of some unknown type, have new unwanted emails in Junk and write filters. But you have said nothing about the type of account and nothing about the Junk settings, so no one knows why those emails are in Junk, are they in Junk because of a server spam setting on email or because Thunderbird labeled it as junk because of a spam setting or not.

Please post some info, it would be helpful.

Are you using a POP or IMAP mail account? You use the word 'Junk' which suggests you are using 'POP'. Post an image showing the account 'Junk settings' window.
