New folders keep getting added even after being deleted
Everyday, when I first open Thunderbird, my folder list opens with a new Archive and Spam folder. I delete the spam folder but there is no option to delete the extra archive folder. I have checked settings and everything seems to be right where it should be. The extra spam folder regenerates after each shutdown of the application, and it is like pulling teeth to get it deleted. The attached image shows my folder lineup. Both highlighted folders are the ones that keep reappearing/will not go away. Any help would be very appreciated.

What happens if instead of deleting the folders you unsubscribe from them? Right-click the account in the Folder Pane, Subscribe, and uncheck the unwanted folders.
I have tried that and they still pop back up as soon as I close and reopen the mail app.
It sounds like default basic imap folders are shown by default.
Some webmail accounts allow you select which folders you want visible in imap or not. See if you can do this in your webmail account accessed using a browser. It might be under typical areas like, Settings or Options.
But, if you get an email in the Inbox and it is a load of junk/spam/scam, how do you mark it as junk and send to the server folder allocated for this purpose - 'Spam', if you are not subscribed to see the 'Spam' folder ? Imap accounts are like a type of virtual view of what is on server, so you can manipulate emails stored on the server by moving them between server folders.

I have tried unsubscribing to the extra spam and archive folder, and they both still reappear once i reopen the app. To your other question, all of my junk email goes to my original junk folder, and the extra "spam" folder just sits idle. The same goes for the extra archives folder, except that one does not have a delete option when you right click on it like the spam folder does.

I've recently seen some cases of old verizon accounts where they seemed to have kept the old verizon server named folders such as 'junk' and moved it into a ATT yahoo server which by default also has a 'Spam' folder. So the user ends up with two default spam/junk folders.
If you change the Account Settings > 'Junk Settings' to use the 'Spam' folder instead of the 'Junk' folder. Are you then able to 'unsubscribe' from seeing the 'Junk' folder ?

Only folders that have the 'Delete' option should be able to be deleted. If there is no 'Delete' then it is a default server folder and cannot be deleted. Your Account Settings need to be using that default Archive folder.
I'm presuming the 'Archives' folder you want to delete, does not contain any emails and does have the right click 'Delete' option. You might not be able to delete it because it is setup in Account Settings > 'Copies & Folders' to be used.
- Right click on imap mail account and select 'Settings'
- select 'Copies & Folders'
- Under the Archive section:
- Make sure the default server Archive folder is selected for use.
- click on OK
Restart Thunderbird.
Now try to delete the unwanted Archives folder which is no longer set up as the Archive folder for use and does have the 'Delete' option.

No sir, this has been an active email account for several years and was originally an AT&T account. I have tried swapping folders and removing/unsubscribing from the original junk folder, but it is still there and that folder does not give a "delete" option like the one that recently appeared does.

Todd, neither of the archive folders give the option to delete, and I have moved the emails around trying to unsubscribe from either, and they both still appear. The extra spam folder is the only one that gives the delete option.
re :originally an AT&T account I thought it had to have something to do with AT&T. I still think this has something to do with AT&T folders being incorporated onto the yahoo servers and ending up with duplicate default folders. You are not the first to report this sort of anomaly.
Are you able to remove anything via webmail account?
