Is it better to leave Firefox or Facebook open to reduce data or close them when not in use?

I find that when I open Firefox, and then say a window for Facebook, my data usage goes up considerably, and as long as the window is open it continues to use up data at a pace. If I close and reopen, the data goes up considerably and then evens out. I'm on satellite internet and I'm trying to learn how to reduce my data use, so any advice in this regard would be helpful. Thank you.

Facebook's regular page keeps current with chat, notifications, etc. Maybe try their ugly mobile page instead?

I work as a social media manager on my home desktop, so the mobile page is not a viable option. But thanks for the suggestion.
