In Thunderbird, why are my inbox messages not always in chronological order?

Several times I have been puzzled to find no new mail in the expected place (bottom of the list) in my inbox, and then, scrolling up, found new mail placed randomly among messages from months ago. Reducing the contents of my inbox has not solved the problem. I can't see any pattern in the type of message that gets misplaced or the circumstances when it happens. Once the messages have landed in the wrong place - for instance 5 messages from last week dumped among some left from February - there seems to be no way I can get them into their proper chronological place.
