I try to log into hostmonster.com as I have hosting there and I get the 'Secure Connection Failed' error indicating timeout. Sometimes try again works in which case I get the OLD version of the CPanel page, mostly it doesn't. I called them and the best we can figure is that there is an old certificate in my settings (I have been using Firefox for a long time), but looking at certs to delete them indicates delete also sets distrust and future certs from the same CA won't be accepted and I don't want that. So how do I clean this up?

I'm guessing the domain of the control panel is different from

www.hostmonster.com

otherwise you wouldn't have this problem.

I think you should try deleting the old server certificate if you find it. There is a way to delete all saved certificates at once if deleting a single one makes it worse. (See the "Corrupted certificate store" section of this article: What do the security warning codes mean? -- note that there might also be an older cert8.db file that you would want to rename or remove when you rename or remove cert9.db)
