Firefox Slow opening local files using file:///x://Default.htm

My new laptop running Windows 10 and using Firefox vers. 54.0.1 is loading local files incredibly slowly. I use some html pages as a local intranet and until now this has worked fine. But this current combination is is too slow, I have had to start using Chrome as default browser and I'd rather be using Firefox. I've seen some other posts but nothing mentioned has been useful. Anyone have a checklist of things that might be causing this?
