Since Microsoft auto updated my computer, I can not open Thunderbird because I I keep getting the message about firefox already running and needs to close but it won't and then I get message about profile missing. I have tried some of the fixes suggested a couple months ago but it get too technical for me. Help??? I need to access old emails and move them so I don't have this problem again.

Try this: Make hidden files and folders visible

The AppData folder is folder is a hidden folder; to show hidden folders, open a Windows Explorer window and choose "Organize → Folder and Search Options → Folder Options → View (tab) → Show hidden files and folders".

Then locate your Thunderbird Profile folder:

  • C:\Users\Windows user name\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\Profile name - (typically 'xxxxxxxx.default' where the x's are letters and numbers)

It will look similar to the image shown below. scroll down and look for a file called parent.lock

  • Delete 'parent.lock' file
  • Close the window.

Access this file:

  • C:\Users\Windows user name\AppData\Local\Thunderbird\Profiles

The 'Profiles' folder should show some profile name folders. Emails are not stored here; it is created by Windows as a cache. Delete any profile name folders you see. (Profile name folders = 'xxxxxxxx.default' where the x's are letters and numbers)

Now try to restart Thunderbird.
