Most of the time I don't want to clutter up an email with several other previous reply's but the program previously would allow "Quote original Email" by right clicking on the email even though the menu block was checked not to quote the original. Really a pain to go back and change the settings each time to allow the message. I am using a work-around by going back to the original and Cntrl C what I want copied and Cntrl V it into the reply I am writing.

Matt is talking about the Composition Toolbar. It's the toolbar that appears at the top of the window in which you compose a message, so you need to have that open first. (e.g. begin a new message) It's the toolbar with 'send', 'attach', 'save' on it as well as other icons. Right-click on it and an indicator appears saying 'Composition Toolbar' with a tick beside it. Underneath it there's an option to customise it.

how about right clicking the toobar and adding the quote icon. through properties.

It quotes the last viewed email.... really great if your replying to two or three earlier emails in one go. As well as doing what you want. (Without a right click)

Sorry but I right clicked on the tool bar and hit every item available including customize and could not find the quote icon. More info please.

this no longer works: Menu location: Tools > Account Settings > account name > Manage Identities > identity > Composition & Addressing Because the menu has changed and is no longer the same thanks to an unwanted change in TB.

Right click the toolbar and select menu bar in the context menu. Or Press the F10 key That is the Windows display menu key BTW

So much for an unwanted change in TB. what 20 versions ago. I think it was version 12 the menu was turned off by default. And it was years ago that Microsoft wanted the menu turned off in all applications and accessed with the ALt or F10 keys.

Want to throw rocks about how you do not like your operating system and the Microsoft design guidelines Go right ahead. Microsoft can be found a 1 Microsoft way Redmond Washington, but don't complain about your operating system here. We already know how to use it.

I quoted a previous post which told us how to compose a reply without quoting the original. Still can't find a reasonable solution. How can you reply without sending all the former emails without just deleting it in the new "send" Email - 'cause it's there in every method of Reply I tried.

  • Right click an account in the folder pane. and select Settings
  • Tools menu (alt+T) > Account settings.
  • Clicking on account settings on the account directory pane you get when you select the account name in the folder pane
  • On the toolbar > Options and clicking on the chevron beside the entry > Account setting.

All those ting take you to exactly the same place.

Right click the account in the folder pane and select account settings Select composition and addressing for the account Deselect quote the original message

I agree that all the choices take you to the Account Setting. The Account Setting does not have a composition choice unfortunately, but thanks for trying. This does not occur: "Right click the account in the folder pane and select account settings Select composition and addressing for the account Deselect quote the original message"

Perhaps you could post an image of your screen where this option is not present. I have never seen a version of Thunderbird since Version 2 when I started using it that did not have this option in this place.

Use the option on the help menu to restart with add-ons disabled to see if it's absence is done by an add-on.

I owe you an apology Matt. When I did as instructed I was looking for "composition, etc." in the drop down menu. It was there but in the menu to the left of the drop down menu. Only after your last reply did I really look at what was there. Got it - got it and it works. Many thanks. Don
