I recently upgraded Thunderbird from ver 38 to ver 44 which turned out to be a big mistake due to a malware/adware infection. I completely removed and Reinstalled ver 38.6 as well as Firefox. Now when I open Thunderbird it opens 3 times. There is no longer an exit/close option at the top right of the window. I assume that it intentional, however then when I use the exit command in the drop down menu all 3 windows will close. Anyone have any idea how to correct this issue?

Chosen solution

Use the file menu to close the instances, all of them one at a time. IIRC that is how to reset it. I think I recall using the X or the task bar does not fix it.

Version 38.6.0 is the current release. This is the official webpage to download the current release. https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/all/

Make sure you only have one installation of Thunderbird. To uninstall: Start > Settings > Programs and Features select Thunderbird and click on uninstall.

The developers thought it would be a neat trick to auto disable the Title Bar. To enable Title Bar: If you cannot see the 'Menu Bar' containing 'File, Edit, view etc.... because the developers also thought it a good idea to auto disable it.... 'Menu icon' > 'Options' > select 'Menu Bar', then 'Tools' > 'Options' > 'Advanced' > 'General' tab

Else if you do not want to enable the Menu Bar: 'Menu icon' > 'Options' >'Options'> 'Advanced' > 'General' tab

  • Click on 'Config Editor' button - it will tell you to be careful :)
  • In top search type: title
  • look for this line: mail.tabs.drawInTitlebar;
  • double click on the line to toggle the 'True' to 'False'
  • close Config Editor window - top right X
  • click on OK to save and close Options

I am not all that concerned with the menu and Title bar. I am able to see the Menu at the top of the window. My main concern is that when it is opened it opens up 3 times, each time it is in a separate Window and when I close one window all 3 close. Thunderbird was completely removed with IOBit Uninstaller ver 5.2 before I re-installed it. I see no evidence of more then one installation.
