- i have 8 accounts

- every email sent comes from account #4

- account #4 is not the default account

- account #4 is not unique or special in any way relative to the other accounts

- even if i change the 'From:' account while composing the email, it still shows up to the recipient having come from account #4

its fixed. every account, regardless, needs its own SMTP with authentication (email acct/pwd)

Of course it is.

If you send using a gmail smtp server, it will silently replace the from address you chose with the address associated with smtp server being used.

In each account's settings, under Tools|Account Settings|Account Settings there is a box labelled "Outgoing Server (SMTP)". Check each of these and make sure it is using a suitable smtp server; a gmail smtp server is suitable only for its own account.

i thought the same except its not using the gmail address associated with the smtp server (lets call that account #3)....its using account #4.

All the standalone ail providers (gmx, gmail, hotmail etc) use this system since they allow you to connect to their servers from anywhere. They need you to be able to identify yourself.

In the past it was commonplace to use your ISP's SMTP server for any or all of your accounts. Often your authentication was awarded due to you being logged in to your ISP to get your internet connection.

With the growing use of smartphones and other portable devices, ISP email had to start using authentication in order to validate your use of their server whilst you were out and about and using other networks to make your internet connection.

So now use of logins and passwords to send using an SMTP server is the norm. Some allow you to use other domains in your "from" addresses, many don't, or may require that you register those foreign addresses.
