I click to open a message and then close the thunderbird goes to minimal,so I click on the tab for full screen and it goes back to the read message,This can go on for several tries until it settles down. What can I do to stabilize Thunderbird?

Your description doesn't totally make sense. 1. one doesn't do a single click to open a message, unless you mean the message preview pane in the main 3-pane window 2. There is no "tab" one can click to go full screen. Do you mean the task bar? 3. If you don't want it to go back to the read message, then what do you think it should be showing?

First I am not good with computers.I will try to explain,I open my Mozilla mail the mail list shows full screen.Next I open an email and read,it is full screen,I click on the x to close it and the mail list goes to a diminished size,so I click on the upper right corner on the box,the next thing that happens is the closed email I just read again opens up.This back and forth goes on for 5 to 10 tries before the mail list stays in place.

when in your mail list. Press F8 to devote half your screen to a reading pane.
