Gmail message in unified mailbox not automatically marked as read

Since upgrading to Thunderbird 38.4.0 (running on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12) mail from my gmail account does not get marked as read automatically any more if I am reading the email in the unified Inbox view. If I expand the unified inbox and select the gmail inbox, then select an unread message it will be marked as read automatically after 5 seconds.

I do have the Display/Advanced settings "Automatically mark messages as read" checked and "After displaying for" set to 5.
