Thunderbird version 38.4.0 started crashing today. It opens with normal screen but (Task Manager Processes) continues in a hang-up loading memory until it crashes. I have AVG Internet Security, Firewall. Per your instructions, checked Firewall settings, all good. Per your instructions, re-downloaded version, same. Renamed old file, downloaded into new file, same. Tried Beta Version, same. Opened in Safe Mode Add-ons disabled, same. Not working.

Any suggestions? I don't want to lose my email records.

contacts are stored in a series of files with an MAB extension.

If you followed the instructions, you have a backup. So do not worry about then now.

If the compact folders did not work. Try opening the Troubleshooting information on the help menu. Then click the show profile button. Close Thunderbird (most important) Delete the following files. (if they exist.)

Panacea.dat. foldertree.json. Xulstore.json parent.lock Global-messages-db.sqlite

Restart Thunderbird.

"Select the Shortcut tab. Matt - "In Target there is says "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" add -offline (Case is important here. Offline is not going to work for example) Click Ok to save changes in the shortcut Use the new shortcut to start Thunderbird. "

I have not used this command before, so sure I am missing knowledge here..... please be more specific for me, today is the day I am working on your instructions. re Target file in desktop shortcut: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird -offline.exe" WILL NOT SAVE "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe -offline" WILL NOT SAVE "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird-offline.exe" WILL NOT SAVE "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe-offline" WILL NOT SAVE

Help?

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" -offline

Like I said, add -offline as shown above.

I forget how literal programming is ... I read 'add' as instruction to me.

So far ... add -offline did not change memory problem when TB opened.

changed to : add -ProfileManager, downloading 6K Imap messages right now, will compact when done. Won't allow me before that, compact is greyed-out when alt-F.

Matt ... Success! No steps worked until .... I deleted the 5 files in the default (original) profile, then restarted Thunderbird using original profile .... IT WORKED.

Re-entered passwords, compacted all, had to empty some junk folders to complete ... all looks normal.

It took me a few days, working around regular computer work, sorry.

Didn't even have to use the backup profile.

Thank you for all your help.

jmka,

which files did you delete?

I followed Matt's direction when all else did not work, and it worked. None of my accounts, files or emails were lost, I just had to re-enter some formatting.

'Delete the following files. (if they exist.)

Panacea.dat. foldertree.json. Xulstore.json parent.lock Global-messages-db.sqlite

Restart Thunderbird."
