I have been running Thunderbird for years now and love it. BUT, both my desktop and laptop stopped downloading/opening my inbox (hotmail) on the 28th October 2015. It just says no messages to download but also pops up in a window - "THUNDERBIRD. Server xxxxxxxxxx@hotmail.com has disconnected. The server may have gone down or there may be a network problem." MS Outlook can open the inbox from the same computers. I tried restarts of thunderbird and the computers with no effect. Outlook.com and MS Outlook and my phone are all opening current inbox emails. I can send emails from thunderbird OK. It has of late had problems copying sent emails to my sent folder. I don't know that it's at all related but some months ago I swapped to an imap account from pop so I could use pc, laptop, tablet and phone all synched. I then disabled but kept the old account for a record of all old emails. I have just uninstalled thunderbird and reinstalled it as it would not just update. After downloading the file and clicking run it would extract the files and then do nothing. Over and over again I tried including with Bitdefender switched off. It didn't do a full auto install so I had to go to the programs folder and run the exe file to get it to open. It is still downloading email titles but still only up to the 28th October. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks, Chris

Just wondering if there's anything like one particular problematic email on 28th Oct with a huge attachment or something like that blocking progress ... possibly causing a timeout.

Also, without knowing why, if I have a problem like this (defying logic) I usually reboot after un-installing software if I'm gonna re-install it, you might have done that, just not clear from your post.

Added : Had overlooked the last part of your post .. can download but not install .. Virus / Malware ?

HI Nicholas, I'm running the latest Bitdefender and I tried the install with it turned off as well but it made no difference. I have only one incoming email on the 28th with an attachment and it's only 1 meg. If I shut down the newly installed thunderbird, when I reopen it, it starts downloading all 1500 of the messages in the Inbox. Last night after a couple of hours it had only downloaded about 500. Today within 1/2 hour it downloaded 32 just now. So something is weird. I have kept the old POP email account for history of emails but have disabled it so it is inactive. I just tried archiving and compacting etc. I then went back to the inbox and it started downloading all the messages. AGAIN. Oh yeah. It also will not scroll continually up the page. If I click on the email at the top of the page i can scroll till it's at the bottom an that's it. I have to click the top email again to scroll down again. Even clicking on the scroll arrow in the scroll bar will only go one page at a time. I particularly wanted to stay with thunderbird coz I like its feature and I have all my emails categorised. Is it time to give up and try a different program? Cheers, Chris

I think you need to establish whether it is your PC/device/OS that has the problem or Thunderbird.

If you can I'd try installing Thunderbird on a different PC, see if it works there on the same email accounts. If it does, the problem is not Thunderbird.
