Thunderbird 38 support leads me to "Menu location: Tools|Options|Advanced|Reading & Display"? I can get to Advanced but what is Reading & Display? And where to find it?

It's in a tab here.

(This is Linux, where the route is Edit|Preferences… rather than Tools|Options…, but it's the same thereafter.)

Are you using TB38? Some of the Options were relocated recently. IIRC Display & Formatting|Advanced was formerly under Advanced|Display.
