Emails are not downloading into my Thunderbird program. Please help.

I have DSL service through AT&T and have an @pacbell.net email address. I normally view my emails at this address through the Thunderbird program.

Since this morning, I have not been able to download emails into my Thunderbird inbox. When I click on "Get All New Messages", I get the message at the bottom of the screen that says "Downloading message 1 of 7", but then, after several minutes, the message "No messages to download" appears, and no email downloads. I am able to see the new emails on Yahoo, but I prefer to use Thunderbird. How can I get the Thunderbird to download my emails again?
