Can't delete downloaded emails that are in inbox

I have a recent but annoying problem with a couple of my email accounts. Emails are downloaded (mostly spam) into my inbox. I then usually go through each deleting if they are of no interest. I can't now do this. The delete button clicks but nothing happens, can't drag them to trash either! I updated the version of Thunderbird I was running but that has made no difference. Done the most popular fix = reboot, no difference.

Can any body help?

Try to rebuild the index file of the troubled folder. Right-click the folder - Properties - Repair Folder
