I use thunderbird as an email client. I download messages from my server only when computer is on.

I was away on a trip for one week. When I returned I turned on computer and downloaded messages. The message list was fine, but only emails since march 8 2015 can be opened. the others opened as blank.

I went to inbox properties to repair folder. after clicking repair folder all emails before march 8 disappeared on list. nothing in trash box.

how can I retrieve these lost emails and fix problem

did you get a virus message from your anti virus?

Yes, I did get a few viruses messages that stand out as a problem:

  • inbox toolbar viruses with mapssetup.exe and calculatorsetup.exe both listed as low threat by Norton - these were quarantined
  • compressed file inbox - which was removed

today received an email from a safe contact that was named as coming from another safe contact.

I can not find any inbox emails prior to March 8

thanks for your advice. it is greatly appreciated.

"compressed file inbox - which was removed "

Contact Norton and ask them how to get your inbox back. They have removed it. If your lucks it is in your quarantine, but putting it back from there will replace your new inbox of mails.

Thanks. I've never contacted Norton before, but shouldn't be difficult to figure out how.

thanks so much for your help.

Mat,

Just to let you know that Norton tried and tried but could not retrieve the inbox. Seems the virus compressed the inbox file that was mimicking a virus and Norton removed it eliminating the emails.

Fortunately I found a back up of the emails dating back to mid January and my server (amhosting) still has the emails since then.

I'm thinking that maybe I should uninstall my current copy of Thunderbird and install a fresh copy. Then copy the messages dating before mind January to the new Thunderbird and the download the messages still on the server. Does this make sense?
