Why has Thunderbird been so slow since I installed version 31?
Hi
I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium and ever since the last major Thunderbird update (version 31, I assume - the one that revised the appearance) my Thunderbird has been really, really slow. There's a noticable pause before it loads a message, generates a reply to a message, or deletes a message. I never had this issue before the update and everything else on my computer runs as it always has.
Other users don't seem to be having this problem, so I'm at a loss to explain why I am. Any help appreciated.
Eddie

Update your graphic driver, that might help (did so for me)

Updated it, thanks for the tip, but the problem still persists. If nobody else knows why I'm having this problem, suppose I'll just have to look for a new mail client. Shame as I've never had any problems with TB before.

There are several reasons which could be impacting on this.
Background processes like updating Windows, Adobe etc. Let Anti-virus update automatically as it is a safety precaution. Suggest you make sure programs ask before updating, so that you can select when this occurs, so it does not impact on performace.
Do you use an anti-virus/firewall product? Is it scanning incoming emails? If yes, then suggest you stop scanning incoming mail.
Slowness can be caused by accessing large files and accrued data, so maybe it is time for a bit of house keeping :)
Suggest you perform all the following in the order listed:
- Create folders to organise emails.
- Inbox should be used for incoming mail and kept low in numbers. It should not be used as a general store.
- Move all emails out of Inbox into suitable folders.
- Delete emails you do not want.
- Empty Deleted and Junk folders.
- When Inbox is empty and you have done the above - compact all folders: 'File' > 'Compact Folders'
- Set up Archiving Options to store by Month and year and select keep folder structure.
See Info here:
- Work through all folders including 'Sent' but not Junk or Deleted
- Archive anything over two months old.
- Tools > Clear recent history
Then clear the global search so that old deleted mail is removed. make hidden files and folders visible
In Thunderbird
- Help > Troubleshooting Information
- Click on 'show folder'
a new window opens showing Profile folder.
- Close thunderbird now this is important
- Look for and delete this file : global-messages-db.sqlite
- close window
Restart Thunderbird a new file will be created.
After doing all this I would recommend you create a backup.
