After clicking the download book on BARD I get the usual OPEN or SAVE option to which I choose SAVE. My default is DOWNLOADS from the My PC screen ( Desktop). Upon completion opening Downloads reveals two files one with 0KB and the other with approximately 9000KB instead of the normal 150000KB that I get using IE . Using IE and going through the same sequence results in a complete book (but slower). Maybe I should mention that BARD is the Blind and Reading Disabled web site for The National Public Library and all books are encrypted for use on readers that have authorized decoders.

OneEye99, I am not sure, but I did look up support for BARD Link to Support at nlsbard.loc.gov/nslbardprod/support.html

Depending on what format is downloaded could have an affect on the size, but I do not have an account to test this.

What are the two file types that are downloaded? Does Internet explorer download a zip and do you have to double click to get two files? Or does Firefox open the zip file automatically?

It may be two files .text and .br

To see how file types are handled in Firefox you can check the menu "Tools" and then click "Options" and "Applications" and search for content type for the file extension that is also downloading in Firefox. In this menu you can change what Firefox does with these files.
