back/forward buttons still not working after following Firefox troubleshooting advice

back/forward buttons stopped working a few days ago. have tried the 4 actions listed on support page (show Nav Bar/ Restore Defaults/ disable add-ons/ Reset) however back/forward buttons remain grey and inoperable. Also, when I go into Tools or View these also turn pale grey and become inaccessible. I have to exit the browser completely before I can use them again

I uninstalled the yahoo toolbar I accidentally got installed and firefox started to behave normally after restart.
