Get Messages not working in the latest version 157.1

rclicken

Since the recent update, 157.1, I cannot get the "Get Messages" button to work and it will not download new emails. I can download a previous version and it works just fine. I also cannot stop the auto updating function even though I check the box to not auto install.

  • In Settings > General
  • Updates' section
  • If you have selected 'check for updates, but ask before installing'

I would then advise - exit Thunderbird, wait a few moments to ensure all background files are updated. Restart Thunderbird and check that setting is still selected.

Also check for Updater software on computer: Maybe you have another program which is auto controlling the installing of updates for Thunderbird and overruling your selection in Thunderbird. So Thunderbird itself is not actually checking and doing the update.

Do you have any 'Updater' software performing updates for various programs on your computer? I know Windows OS does provide an 'Update software app' in it's app store. Are you using it ?

Also Anti-virus programs also provide updater options. I have an Anti-Virus - Norton - and it will check for updates for various programs. I had to remove Thunderbird and Firefox from it's list.

Additional information on how to have more control over updates:

  • In Settings > General
  • Updates' section
  • uncheck this option: 'Use a background service to install updates'

What does this mean: I means, if you allow an update, the Windows UAC window pops up asking if you really want to allow that particular update. So you get the opportunity to stop it even if you accidentally had allowed in the first place. User Account Control (UAC) is a key part of Windows security; it is a feature designed to protect the operating system from unauthorised changes.

If you select the option to 'use a background service to install updates', then it switches off the UAC prompt and just allows the update without any additional security prompts.
