what is the exact step-by-step process to download and install Mozilla Thunderbird on a Linux mint computer? I have the download from Thunderbird extracted to a directory one off the root? I am not good with Unix terminology. I do not know what file I have to execute or if at the command line, what code to install the program.

I am not a Linux expert, so I avoid installing programs from the command line, especially if there is an alternative. In this case, I'd install it from Mint's Software manager. This will install it in the right place with all the right dependencies.
I wonder if you might already have it installed? I believe it's a standard package with most distributions, unless you explicitly decline it during installation.
