Is there a way for me to opt out of any new "AI" functionality/features that would otherwise be enabled by default? Like the tab suggestions and perplexity in search. Having AI shoved down my throat from every corner of the internet is kind of frustrating.

Hi there,

We have indeed, several AI-powered features in Firefox but the good news is, you can absolutely control them, including turning them off if you prefer not to use them. Here's a quick overview:

  • AI Chatbot in Firefox Sidebar. This feature allows access to AI chatbot from the sidebar. If it was enabled accidentally, you can disable it by unchecking the AI chatbot option in the Firefox tools section.
  • AI-Powered Link Previews. AI is used here to enhance link previews with extra information. This is completely optional, and you’ll find steps to enable or disable it in the linked article.
  • Smart Tab Groups. This uses AI to automatically group similar tabs. If you haven’t turned this on, it won’t affect your browsing. No action is needed unless you want to explore it and you’ll find steps to enable or disable it in the linked article.
  • Alt Text Generation for PDFs. This feature uses AI to generate alt text for images in PDFs. It’s off by default, so you won’t need to do anything unless you choose to enable it.
  • Perplexity Search Integration. Perplexity is being offered as an optional built-in search engine. If you prefer not to use it, you can remove it from your search engine list using the steps in the article.

I hope this helps clarify things, and let us know if you have any further questions!

I am using Firefox 144.02 64 bit for Windows. Windows is currently 25H2 with all available updates as of Nov.9 Perplexity Search has taken over my browser. I have unchecked it in "Search" leaving only my default of "Duck Duck Go" with "Google" as a "Plan B."

Even though I have disabled Perplexity it still preempts every search and I have to physically change to my authorized engine of choice. The "Remove" button on the search selection is greyed out and non-functional. I can "Add" but "Edit" and "Remove" are not available.

I have done an uninstall and reinstall, restoring my bookmarks from backup. It didn't help.

Can you please tell me how to remove this unwanted AI. I've been with Firefox from the beginning, but this is a deal breaker.

@Konstantina Papadea You are completely erasing trust in Firefox and Mozilla by using an opt out model for AI.

I just noticed "Ask ChatGPT (Z)" in my Firefox context window. I DID NOT CHOOSE TO INSTALL THIS. I am actually quite interested in LLM capabilities, but I an NOT interested in supporting Mozilla if you are going to force AI on us users. CUT IT OUT!

Hey there, when you are on the list of the search engines, try to click the "check" button next to the perplexity, does that work for you? If not please let me know because you might have a bug.

Hi there, Firefox is fully customizable. If you don't want a capability you can simply remove it. You can see how to do so here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/ai-chatbot
