As of last week, FF works for a few minutes on startup, but then when you open a new tab and try to go to a site you just get the dancing period, nothing opens. Already open tabs with sites generally still work, but sometimes crash the tabs after a bit. We've tried starting without extensions, uninstalling and reinstalling FF, changing the profile, logging in the PC (Win 10, up to date) with a different login, running SFC and DISM on the PC, and just about everything else.

Opening the FF console shows this message when the tab just rocks the period:

WindowsJumpLists: Failed to fetch favicon for https://online.adp.com/signin/v1/?APPID=WFNPortal&productId=80e309c3-7085-bae1-e053-3505430b5495&returnURL=https://workforcenow.adp.com/&callingAppId=WFN&TARGET=-SM-https://workforcenow.adp.com/theme/admin.html NS_ERROR_FAILURE: WindowsJumpLists.sys.mjs:257:29

Edge works perfectly (and unfortunately, I'm having to use Edge to enter this ticket.). Other applications don't have any issues. I'm not having this issue on 2 other similar PCs I have that run FF, only this one.

Any ideas of what might be the issue with FF on this PC? Thanks, Alex

Hi Alex, is there any error message, for example, site not found, server not responding, etc.?

Do private windows work any better? The main difference is that private windows do not rely on the disk cache or cookies saved in regular windows. Also, the stricter tracking protection may block some additional scripts the page normally loads.

The error message you quoted is related to the Jump List, which is the list of sites that appears when you right-click Firefox's button on the Windows Task Bar. Does the problem occur when using that list, or just using Ctrl+T (or clicking the + button on the toolbar) to open a new tab? Maybe it's a secondary issue.

Hi,

No, private windows have the same issue. No error message other than what I showed that the console shows. No error messages, i just sits there and wiggles the dot on the "New Tab" tab. Once and a while you'll get the "crashed tab" message, but clicking reload doesn't work.

I just tried the "Jump List" (the "Frequent" list when I right-click the taskbar icon") and it opens the site in a new tab. Then FF works again, new tabs work, etc., for a short period of time (like closing FF and re-opening it) but it stops working after a short period of time.

Anything else to check? Thank you, Alex

Does it make any difference if you set your new tab to the Blank page instead of the Firefox Home page? You can change that on the Settings page, Home panel.

Hi,

That didn't work. Setting it to Blank the first time, did unlock it for a bit, but then they stopped working again. Just like shutting it down and re-opening FF. Trying to switch it back to Firefox Home, didn't change anything, nor switching back to Blank again cause it to start working for a period.

Very weird!

It sounds like Firefox may be waiting/spinning because it has too many connections open, but I don't know why it is running into that situation.

Aside from open tabs, there may be background connections in use by service workers. You can unload those by opening the about:serviceworkers page and using the Unregister button for sites you do not need to use at the moment.

Otherwise, hmm.

I checked serviceworkers and there are 4, one for YouTube (I have some music videos hanging on a tab), google messages (I use there messaging program on my phone and PCs), there is dnschecker.com (is that for FF?) and the last is for our ticketing system (we're an IT service firm). I did unregister the YouTube one and then it came back when I started the video.

I checked my home-office PC (remotely) and it has at least 50 service workers and no issues with FF.

Here's a screenshot of the crashed tab message I sometimes get.

I don't think any service workers used for internal purposes are on the page. Is it possible the DNS checker is for a security/privacy-related add-on?

It might be part of Webroot, but all our computers run that. I unregistered it and started it in Troubleshoot mode and made sure it wasn't in service workers. The problem still happens. I'm on my WFH PC now with DNS checker (and Webroot) and am having no issues with FF, so I don't think that's the issue. And the Office PC worked for years with Webroot so I don't see how that's the issue. I also reinstalled Webroot while trying to resolve the issue before I opened this ticket.

Anything else to check?

Thanks.
