I am currently running Linux Mint 17.2 as the os and Thunderbird 31.8. no sound plays for a new email. I was using Windows 8.1 and it was working fine. Other sounds play fine in this os

Is it turned on in Edit > preferences?

Yes, everything is enabled as it should be. I have tried my own sound file, as well as default and neither work.
