I want to sychronize Thunderbird with my iPhone 5c so when I respond to emails from my iPhone 5c the sent messages also appear in my Thunderbird Sent folder. This is preferable to always cc'ing my home email on my iPhone so that it appears on Thunderbird when I log on my home PC.

You need an IMAP email account and both the email client on your phone and computer setup as IMAP.
